Michael “Mic” McCormick, 54, of Metamora, IL, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Carle Methodist Hospital in Peoria, IL, after a brief battle with brain melanoma. His wife, Kathy, and children, Jack and Brooke, were by his side when he passed.

Mic was born in Peoria, IL, on July 25, 1968, to James “Jay” and Diane McCormick.  He attended Richwoods High School, where he was an important member of the school’s swim team.  He continued his swimming career at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he received a degree in biology.  Mic went back to school to receive his teaching credentials and then began a career as a teacher and administrator. He started teaching at his high school alma mater before becoming an administrator at Beverly Manor Grade School, Edinburg Community School District, and Creve Coeur Grade School. He went back to teaching at Peoria High School before becoming an administrator there.  He ultimately enjoyed teaching, so he went back to the classroom as a Richwoods High School biology teacher.

Swimming was always one of Mic’s great interests. After his own swim career ended, he began his career as a coach.  In fact, he met his wife through one of the swimmers he coached. Numerous swimmers were lucky enough to have him as a mentor through Central Illinois Aquatics, Eureka College, Metamora Area Swim Team, Metamora High School, and Richwoods High School.  Swimming was one of the important parts of his family, and his greatest joy was being able to coach his children through their high school swimming careers.

Mic also loved the outdoors and would go on many fishing and hunting trips throughout the year. He was happiest when on salmon, walleye and crappie fishing trips with his friends and family.  He was also a great cook and loved to experiment with different recipes on the multiple grills he owned. His greatest cooking accomplishments were with different BBQ recipes.

He is survived by his wife and children, his mother, and his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Scott Mayer.

Cremation rites have been accorded.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Swim Across America  online at http://www.swimacrossamerica.org/goto/MicMcCormick, a charity that raises money for cancer research and patient programs.  Online condolences at www.masonfuneralhomes.com.
