Richard "Dick" William Powers, Jr., 82, of Metamora, IL, passed away at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Snyder Village in Metamora surrounded by his wife and family.
Born on March 6, 1940, in Peoria, IL, to his loving parents Richard W. and Dorothy (Trenton) Powers, Sr., his greatest achievement was marrying the love of his life, Sandra Jo "Sandy" Washburn on November 5, 1960, at St. John's Catholic Church in Peoria, IL.
Richard was a 1958 graduate of Spalding Institute in Peoria. He had a successful and prosperous career as an electrical engineer at Caterpillar Tractor Company for 40 years, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed scuba diving and talking to everyone about his beautiful wife. He was best known as Pawpaw by his grandchildren, and enjoyed asking them if they were his buddy. A handyman at heart, there was no job he couldn't handle; a trait he passed on, along with his great sense of humor. Richard was a strong man of faith; you could count on him attending mass at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in rural Metamora or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Peoria Heights. He truly had a heart of gold.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Sandy of Metamora; seven children, Terri Gove of Metamora, Todd (Carol) Powers and Scott Powers both of San Diego, CA, Shannon (Angie) Powers of Groveland, IL, Erin (Bryan) Miller of Washington, IL, Ryan (Sophia) Powers of Erie, CO, and Matthew (Angie) Powers of Hawthorn Woods, IL; twenty-five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five siblings, Mary Ellen (David) Gill, Jim (Nancy) Powers, twins Phyllis (Gonzela Ortega) Powers-Sieks and Phillip (Mary Ann) Powers, and Janice (Lance) Diekow; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Powers and son-in-law Edward John Gove, Sr.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 6, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Metamora with Father David Kipfer officiating. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 3:30 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Mason Funeral Home Metamora Chapel with visitation to follow from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Burial will be in St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery in rural Metamora.
