Mary Garrett Obituary

Mary E. Heiple Garrett, 77, of Washington, IL, passed away at 10:40 PM, Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Cornerstone Rehabilitation and Health Care in Peoria.

She was born on March 14, 1944, to Robert C and Elizabeth Plack Heiple. She married Michael Garrett in Peoria on August 1, 1970 and divorced in 1985.

Surviving is her brother Robert C. (Joyce) Heiple II of Metamora, IL; one sister Libby (Roger) Belvill of Washington, IL. Also surviving are five nephews, two nieces, thirteen great-nephews, and five great-nieces. Preceding her in death were her parents, many uncles and aunts, and infant twin brother Donald who passed away on March 15, 1944. 

She attended and graduated valedictorian of her high school class from the Illinois School for the Deaf and Blind in Jacksonville, IL. Mary then attended and graduated from the University of Illinois with honors, having spent a year in Lima, Peru studying Spanish. She later taught at Bergan High School in Peoria for one year. 

Mary had four guide dogs over the years that she dearly loved. She enjoyed doing handwork, being involved in spinning, weaving, and knitting. Mary was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Peoria.

A private graveside service will be held at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
