Irene Baker Obituary

Irene H. Baker, 99, of Washington, passed away at 12:25 pm on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Apostolic Christian Skyline in Peoria.

She was born on February 11, 1925, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Thomas and Anna Datisman McGinnis. She married Vincent J. Baker on September 14, 1946, in Dubuque. He passed away on October 30, 1998. One son, Dennis, and one sister, Vera Sullivan, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Gerald Baker of Florida, and three daughters, Diane (Bob) Moore of Petersburg, IL., Karen (Vernon) Cotton of East Peoria, and Mary (Rick) Hayse of Peoria. Also surviving are five grandchildren, five step grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Irene was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, where her faith and community spirit shone brightly. She dedicated many years to the Women's Guild at the church, contributing to its growth and success with her characteristic enthusiasm and kindness.

Winter months found Irene and her husband, Vincent, basking in the sunshine of Ft. Meyers, FL, where they shared a passion for playing cards. Irene was an avid bridge player, her sharp mind and competitive spirit making her a respected opponent and a sought-after partner.

Irene's legacy is one of love and friendship, a life beautifully lived and generously shared. Her memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington.  Fr. John Bazimenyera “Fr. Bazi” will celebrate.  Her visitation will be one hour before her mass also at the church. The burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be given to the American Lung Association or the American Parkinson Disease Association.
