Elizabeth "Muriel" Nelson Obituary

Elizabeth “Muriel” Nelson, 92, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 surrounded by family at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home. She was born on July 20, 1928 in Llangennech, Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom of Great Britain to David John and Gladys (Rees) Gunn.

On February 20, 1946 she married American GI Bernard F. Zessin in Bynea, Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom and shortly after moved to Trivoli, Illinois. She proudly became an American citizen in 1950. They divorced but later in life were able to become friends and enjoy time together with their family until Bernard’s death in February 2005.  On September 2, 1966, Muriel married Harry J. Nelson in Quincy, Illinois and spent many happy years together until his death in February 1998.

Surviving are a daughter Cheryle B. Zessin (and Michael) Gleason; two sons Gregory W. (and Deeann) Zessin, and Kent W. (and Lisa) Zessin; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. She also leaves behind two nieces, a great niece, and a great nephew in Wales. All of whom she loved very dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers.

Muriel was lovingly referred to as the “Queen” by her family, in part because of her strong Welsh accent and her love for all things British Royalty, but mainly because she took so much care in her personal presentation. She was always the epitome of fashion from her stylish clothing and jewelry to perfect hair and make-up.  Her sense of humor was like none other and is one of the many things that will be dearly missed by her family. She was the life of the party, whether making everyone laugh, or breaking out in song with her beautiful voice. She never knew a stranger and always made everyone feel welcomed. Muriel spent many years working at Bel-wood Nursing Home, caring for patients and staying by their side so they would not pass alone if there was no family there to hold their hand.  Her compassion for others was limitless.  She was so loved by her family here and abroad. She has left each of us with special moments, lessons and memories that will be forever cherished.

Cremations rites have been accorded.   A celebration of life will be conducted at a later date in the spring/early summer of 2021 with family and friends.  Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home marked “Care”.  The family would like to thank the staff for their truly compassionate care of our beloved “Queen” in her final days.
