Arne C. Carlson, 92, of Chillicothe, IL passed away at 12:10 pm on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Heritage Health-Chillicothe. He was born on May 29, 1928 in Chicago, IL to Conrad and Edith (Peterson) Carlson. He married Mary M. Michael in the early 1950’s and they were married for 63 years prior to Mary’s passing on October 18, 2016.
Surviving are his son, David (Deb) Carlson of Council Bluffs, IA; daughter, Cathy Schultz of Chillicothe; three grandchildren, Amy (Cody) Jackson of Chillicothe, CJ (Melissa) Carlson of Boone, IA, and Kylene Carlson of Tulsa, OK; three great-granddaughters, Presley and Hensley Jackson and Melody Carlson; one great-grandson on the way; brother, Ingemar Carlson of Plainfield, IL; and niece, Ginny (Ken) Smith of Glendale Heights, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Scott “Scotty” Schultz.
Arne was raised in Chicago, was elected Mayor of the Student Council in grade school, and was the Captain of ROTC at Fenger High School. Arne was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran, serving during World War II. He was a radio operator and spent most of his time aboard ship in the Bering Sea. Arne was a member of the American Legion Post #9 in Chillicothe. Arne was a graduate of Bradley University and then began his career with Caterpillar Tractor Company in property liability insurance in the Treasury Department, retiring on March 1, 1985.
In 1940, Arne started his 56 year career with the Boy Scouts, receiving the Order of the Arrow in 1943. During the 1960’s he was Scout Master of Troop 91 in Chillicothe and was also a Little League coach in Chillicothe. Arne enjoyed bowling, having been on three championship teams, one in high school, one at Caterpillar, and one in the business men’s league in Chillicothe.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of Ashes will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Metamora, IL at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Legion Post #9, 1043 North Second Street, Chillicothe, IL 61523. Online condolences at www.masonfuneralhomes.com.
