WASHINGTON ? Vernon George Attig, age 92, passed away Wednesday morning, January 15, 2014 at his home. Born May 14, 1921 in Low Point, Woodford Co., IL, to Ralph and Lydia (Schneider) Attig, he married Dorothy Glabe on November 28, 1946. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before her death on December 30, 2012. His parents, two sisters - Ruth Cross and Joan Presley, one daughter - Doris Krus and grandson - Jon Bailin also preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, David (Sheila) Attig of Washington; daughters, Karen (Robert James) Roy of Ottawa, IL, Diane (Derek) Price of Peoria, IL; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. A WWII Army Veteran, Vernon was inducted on September 19, 1942 and served three years, three months service, including 31 months in the European Theater of Operations. He was stationed in France and North Africa earning 2 Bronze Battle Stars and was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant 5 on December 28, 1945. Vernon returned to Washington, IL where he worked for Garber Motor Co., was co-owner of Jack and Vern?s Shell Servicestation, and retired in 1989 after 26 years as Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Washington. He was a charter member of Grace Bible Church in Washington, IL where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 11 a.m. Pastor Adam Kipp will officiate. Visitation will be 1 1/2 hours prior to services at the Church and burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Missions or Canopy Fund at Grace Bible Church.
