Sue M. Sweeney

Sue M. Sweeney, 86, of Washington, IL, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, just a day shy of her 87th birthday.

Born on September 10, 1938, in Akron, OH, she was the beloved daughter of Hubert A. and Arlene G. Bischoff Sutherland. She married Jerry Sweeney on September 10, 1960, a bond that lasted until his passing on September 12, 2003. Sue was also preceded in death by her cherished parents and her dear sister, Ann Straub. She found love again, marrying Dr. David Dillon on October 2, 2016, who lovingly survives her.

Her legacy lives on through her two daughters: Terri (Craig) Tomlinson of Tellico Plains, TN, and Judi A. (John) Leins of Peculiar, MO. She is also survived by her stepson Mark (Julie) Dillon of Chicago, IL, and stepdaughter Amy (Carl) King of Charlotte, NC. In addition, Sue leaves behind 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her brother, James (Alice) Sutherland, of St. Petersburg, FL.

Sue was active at Calvary Community Church in Women in Mission. She also served on the Board as a Deaconess. Sue was eager to help others with meals and visiting shut-ins. For 25 years, she worked as a nurse at Washington Christian Village, where Sue lovingly cared for residents during the third shift. For many years, she volunteered at the Et Cetera in Eureka, IL.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation and dinner on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A funeral service is scheduled for 6:00 pm. The entire celebration will be held at Calvary Community Church, 112 Calvary Way, Washington, IL, where Pastors Clayton Tinervin and Adam Kipp will lead the service. A private family burial will follow on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in rural Morton, IL. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials in her name be directed to Calvary Community Church. The Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington has been entrusted with the arrangements.
