Sonya L. Betson, 86, of Washington, IL, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She was born on September 27, 1934, in Peoria, IL, to Ludwig and Lillian (Faust) Vogel. She married Charles P. Betson on August 12, 1961, in Peoria.
Surviving are her daughter, Cheryl (Alan) Pope of Miramar Beach, FL; daughter and caregiver, Diane (David) Scott of Washington; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son Gary Allen, sons Chuck and Eddie Betson, grandson Josh Blackwell, brother Warren Vogel, and sister Elaine Peterson.
Sonya worked at Foster & Gallagher where she met her husband and at Carson Pierie Scott until its closing. She then found her true calling when she started a Day Care. Until the end, she still kept in touch with many of the parents. After retirement, she moved from Peoria to Leisure Acres in Washington; there she became involved with the Golden Agers, planning events, working in the kitchen, and was elected president. She was also known for all of the different kinds of Christmas cookies she gave out every year. Sonya was a HUGE Cubs fan her entire life and the day they won the World Series was one of the happiest days of her life.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington. There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, American Diabetes Association, or the American Lung Association.
