Shirley L. Bandeko, 91, of Serenity Assisted Living in East Peoria formerly of Washington, IL, passed away at 11:58 pm Monday, October 10, 2022, at Unity Point Health Methodist in Peoria, IL.
Shirley was born on April 6, 1931, the daughter of John and Hazel Abbott Garretson. She married Robert H. Bandeko on April 6, 1948, in Peoria. Robert passed away on September 28, 2021. Her parents, one daughter Linda Davis, and two sisters, Nancy (Jones) Gentile and JoAnn (Jones) Martin and one brother Jack Garretson, all preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons Daniel (Cathy) Bandeko of East Peoria and David (Deb) Bandeko of Peoria, and one daughter Dianna (Scott) McGrew of Poolesville, MD. Also, surviving are nine grandchildren; Missy, Jenny, Mary Beth, Annie, Brian, Steve, Laura, Michael, and Matthew; 14 great-grandchildren; Marissa, Justin, Sarah, Josh, Nicholas, Blake, Boston, Niko, Luca, Connor, Erin, Gracelyn, Abby, and Evie; six great-great-grandchildren; Theo, Colby, Josie, Mary Catherine, Francis, and Annika.
She attended Washington High School and graduated from Flamingo Beauty College in Peoria. Shirley enjoyed many activities as a mother, including Cub Scout den mother and room mother throughout her children's grade school years.
Shirley had many careers during her life; she operated a small restaurant called the Snack Shack in Goodfield, IL. She was the owner-operator of a beauty salon, a thrift store in Sunnyland, and a lunchroom monitor at Central Grade School in Washington.
Shirley enjoyed many activities, talking to her flowers, volunteering at Riverside Church in Peoria, Bradley Basketball, camping, square dancing, bingo, country music shows and especially her wonderful dog, Holly.
A funeral service is scheduled at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington at 11:00 am Saturday, October 15, 2022. Pastor John King will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Mason-White Funeral Home from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Additional visitation will be one hour before her service on Saturday. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the International Rett Foundation in the name of her great-great-granddaughter Josephine "Josie May" Roberts.
