Sheryl L. Hovey

Sheryl L. Hovey, 68, of Peoria, IL, passed away at 2:06 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Sheryl was born on December 22, 1957, in San Antonio, TX, to Robert and Nola (Finney) Strickler. Her upbringing in a military household instilled in her a strong and enduring sense of patriotism that became a defining part of who she was. Sheryl grew up in a large family and graduated from Limestone High School.

Sheryl’s greatest joys stemmed from spending time with her children and grandchildren. Whether it was at a family gathering, volunteering at school-related events, teaching in children’s church, or playing board games, she treasured every moment she shared with the people she loved most. She also enjoyed traveling and exploring new places while creating lifelong memories. Her creativity shone through her sewing and crafting; her handmade gifts will be cherished for years to come.

After spending 28 years caring for the smiles of countless children, Sheryl retired as a dental assistant from the Peoria Health Department. Her compassion for others was evident in the way she advocated for her patients.

Sheryl is survived by her three children: Jill (Cristian) Portillo of Peoria, IL; Joshua (Maggie) Hovey of Lacon, IL; and Julia (Adam) Dexter of Princeville, IL. Additionally, she was a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren: Hadassah Portillo, Emmanuel Portillo, Emily White, Gunner Hovey, Eden Hovey, Eldon Hovey, Ada Dexter, and Dean Dexter.

She also leaves behind her siblings: Robert (Rita) Strickler Jr. of Minnesota; Cynthia Strickler of Oregon; Karen Gilmore of Illinois; Deborah (Kyle) Pirtle of Washington; Richard (Jeannine) Strickler of Georgia; and Angela Strickler of Illinois, along with many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Patriotic-Themed Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at Centro de Restauración church at 3405 North Wisconsin Avenue, Peoria, IL 61603 on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. This is to be followed by a Private Strickler Family Dinner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church she called home: Centro de Restauración. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.masonfuneralhomes.com. A special thank you goes to the healthcare Mission Partners at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center and the staff at Bickford Senior Living in Peoria.
