Shelby Reese Baker

Shelby R. Baker, 17, of Peoria, IL, passed away at 6:20 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at her residence.

Shelby Reese Baker was born on November 13, 2008, and from the very beginning, she was a gift that changed the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Shelby lived with the rare genetic condition Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS), a condition that brought many challenges and limitations to her life. But if you asked those who loved her most, they would tell you that Shelby’s life was never defined by what her body could or could not do. She was so much more than her diagnosis.

Shelby was innocent, happy, strong, and remarkably resilient. She had a way of touching people without ever saying a word. Her smile and her laugh were her signature—completely contagious and impossible to forget. She brought light into rooms simply by being in them.

Through Shelby and her journey with PKS, her family was given something they never could have anticipated: a community of people who understood. Families from around the world, connected by children who shared the same rare diagnosis, became part of Shelby’s story. The relationships formed through PKS became some of the most meaningful and treasured relationships her family could have ever known. Shelby connected people who may have otherwise never crossed paths, and her life helped create a sense of belonging, understanding, and friendship among families walking a road that few others could truly understand.

Shelby’s greatest gift may have been the way she reminded everyone around her what really matters. She taught those who loved her that joy can exist alongside hardship, that strength does not always look the way we expect it to, and that a life does not have to be long or easy to be profoundly meaningful.

Shelby was deeply loved by her parents, Amber, Tom, and Kayla, and by her brothers, Bryson, Bentley, and Myles. She was cherished by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends, caregivers, and by the many people whose lives she touched simply by being Shelby.

For nearly 18 years, Shelby lived in a body that placed limitations on her. Today, those limitations are gone. Her body may have been fragile, but her spirit was never defined by it. She is free now, free from the limitations of her body, free from the struggles that made life so difficult, and free to simply be.

While her family’s hearts are broken by her absence, they find comfort knowing that Shelby’s suffering has ended and that the little girl with the contagious smile and unforgettable laugh is finally at peace.

Shelby leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured by accomplishments, words, or years. She leaves behind love, connection, resilience, and countless lives made better simply because she was in them.

Her life mattered.

Her presence mattered.

And she will be loved, missed, and remembered for the rest of our lives.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm with Words of Remembrance to follow at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Mason Funeral Home Germantown Hills Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Shelby’s memory. A memorial account has been established to collect donations in Shelby’s name. The funds will be given to OSF Children’s Hospital with the goal of naming a room in her honor – a permanent reminder of the beautiful little girl whose life touched so many.
