It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard E. "Dick" Steele, who left us peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the age of 67. Richard was born on August 7, 1957, in Fairfield, IA, to James R. and Delores I. (Medaris) Steele. He married Kathy M. Meis on April 14, 1984, in Peoria, IL, and spent his life as a devoted husband, father, and friend.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy of Metamora; children, Dr. Kellie Steele of Madison, WI and Ryan Steele of Springfield, IL; and brother, Jim "Rusty" Steele of Fairfield, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A man of immense creativity and skill, Dick was known for his ability to build and fix just about anything. Whether it was woodworking, electronics, or home improvement projects, Dick's hands could turn raw materials into something extraordinary. His workshop was his sanctuary, and his creations were a reflection of his dedication to craftsmanship. As a true "Midwest dad," Dick also took great pride in his yard, often found tending to it with care and precision in his jean shorts and tennis shoes.
Beyond his work and hobbies, Dick was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered with the local First Robotics team, generously passing on his wealth of knowledge and inspiring young minds to explore the world of engineering and invention. His mentorship left a lasting impact, and his hands-on approach to life was an example for all who knew him.
Dick was also an avid traveler, with a love for exploring new places. Whether it was scuba diving in tropical waters or simply road-tripping through the countryside, he embraced the joy of discovery. His love for adventure extended to his passion for racing. From flipping go-karts to cheering at the Indy 500 every year, he loved speed.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Christian Union Church in Metamora.
