Richard Ray Bales, 89, of East Peoria, IL passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Snyder Village Nursing Home in Metamora, IL.

He was born on July 21, 1933, in East Saint Louis, IL, to Russell and Belle (Borland) Bales. He and Marylee Fey were married on June 9, 1997.

Surviving are his wife, Marylee of East Peoria and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was a U.S. Army Veteran who was drafted into the Army on his 21st birthday and served during the Korean Conflict. After two years of service, he used the G.I. Bill of Rights to attend college, receiving his bachelor's degree from SIU-E and his master's degree from IIT in Chicago.

He began a 27-year career at ICC when the college opened. He frequently said "it's not often one gets an opportunity to start a college."

In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, tennis, golf, and hunting, all done with friends.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Mason Funeral Home Germantown Hills Chapel with Bob Ryan and Rick Becker officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to his service, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Federated Church Mission Committee, 3601 North Sheridan Road, Peoria, IL 61604 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
