Oliver David Smith

Oliver David Smith, 76, of Dunlap, IL, passed away March 1, 2012 at Methodist Hospital, Peoria, IL. He was born March 13, 1935 in Chicago, IL to parents Oliver and Sally (Neville) Smith. Also known as O. David or Dave, he lived in the Peoria area for 43 years and practiced as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in Peoria from 1969 until his retirement in 2000. He was a 1962 graduate of Monmouth College with a B.S. in Biology and a 1969 honors graduate of The University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Chicago. His professional and scholastic accomplishments and affiliations included memberships in the honorary Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, Omicron Kappa Epsilon Honorary Dental Society, Award of Merit from American College of Dentists, and member of the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, and the Peoria District Dental Society. He was also a veteran of military service serving as a radar technician in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957, and again from 1971 to 1979 as a U.S. Naval officer in the Reserve Dental Corps ending his military career at the rank of Lieutenant Commander (O-4). His passions included flying as a private pilot, golf, fishing, art, photography, boating, ship model building, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, spending time with his four children and four grandchildren, and his beloved dogs Chopper and Harley. He is survived by three of his four children, David D. (Carolyn) Smith of Spokane, WA, Lynne N. Hafely of Peoria, IL and Edmond R. Smith of Perdido Key, FL, four grandchildren and one great grand child. He was preceded in death by one son Lonn Chester Smith and one brother. Memorial services will be at 4:00pm Sunday March 4, 2012 at Mason Funeral Home Germantown Hills Chapel with Rev. Roger Ruhman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Cremation rites have been accorded. May you rest in peace dear father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
