Oda S. "Sue" Schertz, 69, of Metamora, IL, passed away at 11:13 pm on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL with family by her side.
She was born on February 6, 1954 in Pekin, IL, to Jeff and Katherine (Bloomer) Owens. She married Charles H. Schertz on May 27, 1978 in Aiken, South Carolina.
Surviving are her husband, Chuck of Metamora; two sons, Corey (Kristin) Ranney of Creve Coeur, IL and Chris (Jessica) Schertz of Bondurant, IA; four grandchildren, Josie Ranney, Alexis (Brendan) Petty, Calvin Schertz, and Samantha Schertz; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia Ranney and Ellie Petty. Sue had twenty-one siblings of which she is survived by thirteen. She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.
Sue was a U.S. Army Veteran, having been stationed in Germany. She was a former EMT for Emergency 116 in Metamora. Sue trained with and worked for the Red Cross for a short period. She and her husband were among the eleven families who joined together to start MGH-JFL.
Sue last worked as an assistant manager for Dollar General in Metamora where she met and made many new friends. She would always do anything she could for anyone who needed help, even when she was ill herself.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at the River Valley Sportsmans Club, south of Germantown Hills, IL. Private family burial of ashes will be held in Hickory Point Cemetery in Metamora at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The A.R.K. Animal Shelter, 477 State Route 26, Lacon, IL 61540 or to the American Legion Metamora Post #89, P.O. Box 1040, Metamora, IL 61548. Online condolences at www.masonfuneralhomes.com.
