Nelson J. Barrick, 78, of Washington passed away at 8:15am on Monday, August 19, 2013 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. He was born on July 6, 1935 in Peoria the son of Nelson and Christine Petarde Barrick. He married Karen H. Cox January 21, 1961 in Peoria. Surviving are his wife and their children Mark (Kim) Barrick of Peoria, David (Diana) Barrick of Washington, Kristy (Brent) Aukes of Wyanet, and Matthew Barrick of Washington. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Alyssa Barrick, Katelynn Aukes, Austin Barrick, Robert, Ryley, and Reese Aukes as well as one brother-in-law Roger (Laura) Cox of Eureka and one niece and four nephews. His parents, and one grandson Jordan Barrick preceded him in death. Nelson was a 1953 graduate of Woodruff High school in Peoria. He worked at A&M International in Peoria retiring in 2000 after 45 years. He also worked for Peoria Public Library for 40 years last working in November of 2012. He was the grandson of Joseph Petarde a renowned stone carver in the Peoria area. Nelson developed an interest in carvings, and had a particular knack for carving small wooden sculptures. His enjoyments in life were camping, spending time with his family, and his two dogs Lily and Annie. The family would like to extend a thank you to the Northern Tazewell Fire Department for their service, as well as the Methodist Medical ICU Staff for their kindness and care. Funeral services will be 11am on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Mason-White Funeral in Washington with Rev. Jennie Churchman officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to his service. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery in rural Glasford. Memorials in his name may be given to the American Cancer Society.
