Merlin Royce Thorndyke, 88, of Eureka, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on July 15, 2026. Born on July 11, 1938, in Kempton, Illinois, Merlin lived a life defined by service, hard work, family, and friendship.

A proud veteran, Merlin honorably served his country in both the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957 and the United States Navy from 1965 to 1968 where was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Marine Combat Medal during his service. The values of duty, integrity, and service remained with him throughout his life. He married Mary Lou Neal on February 20, 1971 until her death in 2011.

Merlin spent many years working as a truck driver and large equipment operator. His career took him across countless miles, where he was known for the friendships he made along the way.

He was an active member of the Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the American Legion. Merlin especially treasured the time he and his beloved wife, Mary, spent together on the Sheriff's Posse, Saddle Club, sharing adventures, laughter, and memories that would last a lifetime.

In his spare time, Merlin enjoyed woodworking in his shop, creating handcrafted pieces that reflected his talent, patience, and pride in a job well done. He was fortunate enough to attend the Honor Flight in 2025. He also loved visiting with friends, never missing an opportunity to share a story or enjoy good company.

Merlin is survived by his daughters, Royce Zehr, Micki Presbrey; his sons, Edward Neal (Tonia), Craig Neal (Julie), and Pat Neal (Amy); 15 grandchildren; a multitude of great-grandchildren; and his sister, Darlene "Sis" Maxwell. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Thorndyke; five brothers, his father, Ralph Thorndyke; and his mother, Ethel Thorndyke.

In accordance with his wishes, Merlin will be cremated and laid to rest next to his wife Mary.

Merlin's legacy of service, craftsmanship, friendship, and love for his family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
