Mary Eleanor Wissel, 82, of Washington passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Unity Point Health-Methodist in Peoria, IL. She was born on April 13, 1934 in Valparaiso, NE the daughter of Cassius Cadwell and Crystal Lucile Rogers Conger. She married Wayne Weldon Wissel on June 15, 1958 in Kewanee, IL. Surviving are her husband, one daughter Deborah D. (Rick) Burrows of Bath, IL; one son Daniel Wayne (Jinx) Wissel of Washington, IL; one grandson Austin Daniel Wissel, four step grandchildren and one step great granddaughter. Further surviving is her sister in law Diane Conger and her children Bryce and Marci and Marci's children Paige and Treyce; sister in law Marilyn Armstrong and her children Marianne, John and Raymond Jr. and John's children and grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Rev. James Conger. Mary graduated from Kewanee High School. She earned her B.S. in Education from Illinois State University and her M.A. from Bradley University. To maintain her credentials as a Speech/Language Pathologist, she earned additional hours from the University of Illinois and Western Illinois University. For 36 years, Mary was a speech Pathologist for the Peoria Public School District and had also served in the Kewanee School District. After retiring in 1995 she continued as a part time employee of Peoria School District 150. Mary along with Wayne was instrumental in the founding of Wissel Trucking in Washington. Formerly, Mary was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma, both honor Societies for Women Educators, Peoria Area Speech and Hearing Association, and American Speech and Hearing Association. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Peoria and an Associate Member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Washington. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Monday, January 9, 2017, at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 401 Walnut St in Washington. The Rev. Dr. Camilla Hempstead will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00pm until 6:00pm Sunday, January 8, 2017 and also one hour prior to her service both at Evangelical United Methodist Church. Cremation will follow her service with a private burial at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. Memorials in her name may be given to, Evangelical United Methodist Church.
