Marcia J. Russell

Marcia Joyce Russell, 84, of Washington passed away at 7:15 p.m., Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at Unity Point Health-Proctor.

She was born on April 25, 1933 in Chandlerville, IL to John and Myrtle (Bull) Houston. After her the death of her parents due to the 1936 South Pekin tornado, she lived with relatives and in foster care for a number of years until she was given a home with Ralph and May Vercler of Washington, IL when she was in high school.

She married Wilbur L. Sommer in September of 1951. After the divorce of she and Wilbur, Marcia later married William S. Russell in March of 1987.

Surviving are one daughter, Sherry (Lou) Wudtke and one son Clint (late Gresha K. Sommer) both of Metamora. Also surviving are five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. One brother and one sister preceded her in death.

In her life, Marcia was a farm wife, a homemaker, Sunday School teacher, bowler and a golfer. She worked for Edgewood Nursery in Peoria for a number of years. Marcia was an avid flower gardener and she also enjoyed square dancing, traveling and fishing. She was a volunteer at the Et Cetra Shop in Eureka, IL. In her later years, her pride was her home and flower beds at her home in Washington. She was a member of Calvary Community (Evangelical Mennonite) Church in Washington.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, Sept 18, 2017, at Calvary Community Church, 115 E. Jefferson St., Washington, IL. Pastor Clayton Tinervin will officiate. Visitation will be one-hour prior (10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.) to her service, also at the church.
