Joan W. Smith

Joan W. Smith, 88, of Germantown Hills, IL passed away at 2:40 pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Snyder Village in Metamora. She was born on July 29, 1927 in Oak Park, IL to Clarence J. and Lillian (Russell) White. She married Lester J. Smith on July 2, 1949 in Oak Park, IL. After 52 years of marriage, he passed away on December 9, 2001. Surviving are her children Richard (Luanne) Smith of Williamsfield, IL, Daniel (Jeanne) Smith of Peoria, Peg (Paul) Gutgesell of Germantown Hills, Cathy (Bill) Palmer of New Castle, WA, Jeanne (Mike) Crotteau of Metamora; daughter-in-law Jeannie H. Smith of Eureka; twenty-six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Gerald Smith, one brother, and two sisters. Joan along with her husband were avid bridge players attaining Life Master status. She also worked with her husband in the family dental business. Joan taught religious education classes and loved her yearly travels, especially to the Pacific North West. In her later years she loved helping with her grandchildren. Joan was a former member of Blessed Sacrament in Morton and a member of St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Germantown Hills. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, rural Metamora with Father Gregory Jozefiak officiating. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 2:30 pm at Mason Funeral Home Germantown Hills Chapel with visitation to follow from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary of Lourdes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Family Resources Center, 415 NE Monroe Street, Peoria, IL 61602.
