Joan Lillian Abel

Joan Lillian (Hahn) Abel, 86, of Lowpoint, Metamora, and Eureka, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 12:17 pm at her son's home in Peoria. She is the youngest child of Charles Lawrence and Elvira Amanda (Schoaff) Hahn, born on November 29, 1928 at her parents' home in Lowpoint. Her siblings are Hazel (Leslie) Whitmer, Earl (Clarice) Hahn, Roy (Della) Hahn, Ruth (Clark) Rediger, Lloyd (Helen) Hahn, Marguerite (Charles) Friday, Ora (Woodrow) Rose, Clifford (Rachel) Hahn, and Paul (Vivian) Hahn. Only Paul of Metamora survives. Joan married Wilbur Merle Abel on February 19, 1947 in Metamora. He passed away in 1993. Their children are Rodney (Bonnie) Abel of Peoria, Marcia (Douglas) Jenkins of Washburn, Roland (Valerie) Abel of Peoria, Robert (Lola) Abel of Indianapolis, IN, and Thomas (Elizabeth) Abel of Huntsville, AL. She was preceded in death by daughter Mary Ann in 1951 and son Russell in 1966. Joan has 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was a bookkeeper for the Lowpoint grain elevator, a very active member of the Lowpoint United Methodist Church, and a volunteer in many area service organizations. Joan and Wilbur were a well-known special music duet at weddings, funerals, and other church functions. In her six years living at Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka, she made many close friends and was active in the apartment community. Her primary interests were family and church activities. She was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her greatest achievement was caring for her family during Wilbur's long recovery from polio, starting in 1953. A Funeral Service for Joan will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at Maple Lawn Homes Memorial Hall in Eureka with Reverend Doane Brubaker officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until service time at Maple Lawn Memorial Hall. Burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Metamora. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Washburn United Methodist Church or Kidz Heart Ministries, Camp Good News, 26010 Liberty Lane, Washington, IL 61571.
