James E. Witt, 81, of Bartonville, IL, passed away at 3:29 am on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born on February 10, 1942, in Peoria. He was the son of the late James E. and Margaret E. Von Hollenbeck Witt. He married Joyce L. Hines in Redland, MD, on March 4, 1967.

Surviving are his wife and two children, Stacy Witt and Brandon (Suzy) Witt, all of Bartonville. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Maggie and Colby; two sisters, Shirley (Roy Gene) Rinehart of Lincoln, AR, and Mary (Donnie) Street of Bartonville, along with several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are one brother-in-law, Norman (the late Linda) Hines of Kensington, MD, and one sister-in-law, Margaret (James) Stinson of Mt. Airy, MD.

Inducted into the U.S. Army in December 1963, Jim served his country honorably until his discharge in December 1966. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. After his service, Jim transitioned to a civilian career as a brick mason for Keystone Steel and Wire in Bartonville.

Jim's career path later led him to serve the community of Peoria County as a Bailiff, a role he performed with integrity and respect for many years. His presence in the courthouse provided comfort and security for those who worked alongside him. In December of 2022, Jim retired, leaving a legacy of professionalism and dedication to the justice system.

Beyond his professional life, Jim was a man of diverse interests. He found joy in the simple pleasures of gambling and playing cards with friends. In his early years, he relished the opportunity to hit the links for a round of golf or to compete in bowling leagues with his wife Joyce, where his competitive spirit shone brightly. A sports enthusiast, Jim was an ardent supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Bradley Braves Basketball team, rarely missing a game and always cheering them on fervently.

Family was the cornerstone of Jim's life, and he took immense pride in attending his grandchildren's activities, celebrating their achievements, and offering his unwavering support. His love for travel led him to explore new horizons, with a particular fondness for cruising, which allowed him to indulge in his sense of adventure and create lasting memories.

Jim's commitment to his community was unwavering. He served with distinction as a volunteer fireman for the Limestone Township Fire Protection District, where his leadership skills shone brightly in his roles as a Trustee and past president of the board. His dedication to his fellow workers matched his passion for helping others, as he stood up for their rights and well-being as a Union Steward for the Keystone Independent Steelworkers Alliance.

In addition to his service as a Trustee for Limestone Township, Jim was a founding member and coach of the Limestone Junior Soccer League, where he mentored young athletes, instilling in them the values of teamwork and sportsmanship. His love for sports was also reflected in his youth when he played softball for Keystone Steel & Wire.

While there will be no public services, Jim's family will privately celebrate his life. His family invites you to share your favorite stories and memories to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name may be given to any CEFCU location, FBO "The Grandchildren of James E. Witt," or to the Limestone Township Fire Protection District.
