James R. Smith, 79, of Washington passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL.

He was born on October 8, 1945, in Quincy, IL the son of Leo and Dorothy Jansen Smith.  He married Carolyn A. Smith on October 16, 1999, in Washington, IL.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife and three cherished children: Rob Smith of Chicago, Stacy (Andy) Kindler of Peoria, and Jennifer O'Brien of Waukesha, WI. His legacy also lives on through seven treasured grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is further survived by four beloved sisters: Deborah Tennyson, Beth Pagel, Martha Allsup, and Lisa Rothenbush. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel, Keith, and Curt, who were a significant part of his life.

Jim was a respected and self-employed tax accountant dedicating his service to his clients and community for many years before retiring 2024.

James frequently found solace on the deck of his home, a cherished book in one hand and his favorite beverage at his side, relishing the serene beauty of his surroundings. His deep affection for animals was unmistakable to all who crossed his path. With a gentle demeanor and a heart full of kindness, he effortlessly became a friend to every creature he met.

While there will be no public services, Jim's family will privately celebrate his life. His remains will be placed in Glendale Cemetery in Washington at a later date.
