James Paul “Jim” Bishop, born August 21, 1940, to Paul and Bernice Bishop in Sterling, Illinois, passed away on July 20, 2026. Jim grew up in Rock Falls, Illinois, where he graduated from Rock Falls High School. He went on to attend the University of Illinois, graduating in 1965.

Jim married his best friend, Karen Foss Bishop, on October 5, 1963. Together, Jim and Karen shared 63 years of marriage and raised two children, Brad Bishop and Brenda Schierl. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His grandchildren were always excited to see their Papa because he was so much fun to be around, and his warmth and sense of humor made time with him special.

Jim was an avid sports fan, faithfully following the Chicago Bears and the Illinois Fighting Illini and often lamenting their woes. He and Karen were devoted Illini fans and longtime season-ticket holders until they moved to Ormond Beach, Florida. They returned to Peoria in 2014.

Community, church, and service were important parts of Jim’s life. He was an active member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Washington, Illinois, and Tomoka United Methodist Church in Ormond Beach, Florida. After returning to Peoria, he became a member of University United Methodist Church. Jim’s community involvement also included coaching Little League baseball, serving for numerous years on the Washington Central Grade School Board, working as a church youth leader in both Washington and Ormond Beach, and supporting many charitable organizations.

Professionally, Jim spent his career in the grocery business, holding several positions with Kroger and food brokerages before eventually owning his own company for many years. He was known for his strong work ethic, honesty, and ability to find the best in people from all walks of life. Jim also had a wonderful sense of humor and brought laughter and kindness wherever he went.

Jim is survived by his wife, Karen; his son, Brad Bishop of Dayton, Ohio, and Brad’s daughters, Abbie of New York City and Zoe of Cincinnati; and his daughter, Brenda Schierl, who was a loving and primary caregiver to Jim and Karen. Brenda’s lifelong partner, Jerry Collins, also provided loving help and support to Jim and Karen. Jim is also survived by Brenda’s daughter, Hannah Schierl Orellana; Hannah’s husband, Manny Orellana; and their children, Ignacio and Jacqueline.

Jim’s family will hold a private celebration of life on August 22, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Kidney Society.
