James "Beetle" Bailey, 82, of East Peoria, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on June 12, 2023 at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, with his wife at his side. He was born on February 18, 1941, in Peoria, IL. He was raised by his mother, Mary Francis (Marquis) Bailey and his stepfather, Fred Bailey.
James had a remarkable life filled with diverse experiences and passions. After graduating from East Peoria High School, he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. As an avid storyteller, James shared tales of his adventures, whether it was scuba diving, skiing trips, hang-gliding, or his memorable encounters with people from various backgrounds during his Navy days. He cherished the opportunity to travel and experience life outside of his hometown.
James was also a cowboy at heart. His genuine love for horses, including his own horses 'Lady' and 'Sassy', reflected his spirit of adventure and his appreciation for nature. He had a deep connection with the outdoors, supporting organizations like the Isaac Walton League and advocating for the preservation of trees.
A dedicated and hardworking man, James worked as a UAW pipefitter at Caterpillar Tractor Company. Beyond his professional life, James had a sharp intellect and was known for his ability to memorize rituals as a member of various Masonic organizations, including Taylor and Hilton Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shriners, and Abbas Grotto.
James instilled a love of learning in his children, encouraging them to focus on education, read widely, and explore their interests. He challenged them to think critically about the world. His children fondly recall dinner table debates and the joy of discovering new knowledge together.
James is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jane (VandeBossche) Bailey. He is also survived by his children: Trelisa Bailey of Washington, IL; Erica (Dennis) Goett of Roanoke, IL; Justin (Katrina) Bailey of Baltimore, MD; and William (Jennifer Osterhage) Bailey of Lexington, KY. James also leaves behind a legacy in his 12 cherished grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his son, James Bailey of Maui, HI.
In his final days, James received exceptional care and support from the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff for their dedication and kindness.
James G. Bailey will be remembered for his incredible stories, his sense of adventure, his love for nature, and his commitment to family. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. James' family has arranged a memorial visitation on Friday, June 23 from 5 PM to 7:30 PM, with Masonic services starting at 7 PM at Abbas Grotto in East Peoria. Cremation has been entrusted to Mason Funeral Home in Washington.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Richard L Owens Hospice Home.
