Herbert H. Thomas, 86, of Germantown Hills, IL passed peacefully at his residence at 8:30 PM on August 12, 2025 with his daughters at his side.
Born February 7, 1939 in Creve Coeur, IL, the fourth of six children, to Herbert and Ella Thomas, Herb married Sally (Ward) Thomas on July 31,1965 in Washington, IL.
Herb is survived by his daughters, Andrea (Chet) Rhodes of Girard, IL and Shawnda Thomas of Germantown Hills, IL; sister, Sue (Dan) Koons of Kearns, UT; grandson, Joel (Terrie) Rhodes; great-grandchildren, Logan, Caitlynn and Chloe; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and three grand dogs, Nash, Krosby and Ash.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally, his parents, and brothers, Jim, Dick, Ronnie and Eddie.
Herb graduated from Metamora High School in 1957 then joined the Peoria Air National Guard. He was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later went through the apprentice program at Caterpillar and became a machine builder/repairman. He worked in East Peoria for 30 years. Herb was also a volunteer fireman for Germantown Hills.
Herb enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golfing, garage sales, a good story and good pranks. Hunting and fishing were his passions. He was a member of Sunnyland Christian Church, and a Ducks Unlimited member. His "happy place" was the River Valley Sportsmen's Club where he was a 44 year member. The highlight of this past year was being on the Greater Peoria Honor Flight. He talked about the amazing and special day it was.
The family would like to thank OSF Hospice, especially Heather, Pam and Angie, who were amazing. Also, our gratitude to the many neighbors, family and friends who have provided love and support over these past years.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Herb did not want a funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at the River Valley Sportsmen's Club, 311 Lucille, East Peoria, on Saturday, August 30 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
