Gustave "Gus" Winters, 86, of Germantown Hills, IL passed away at 8:00 pm on Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke. He was born on July 28, 1929 in Peoria, IL to Gustave and Josephine (Rupert) Winters. He married Norma Bergia on September 4, 1954 in Springfield, IL. She survives. Also surviving are his daughter Debbie and son Chris. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons Tommy and Eric. Also preceding him in death were his four siblings Stanley, Douglas, Donald and sister Lillian Murray. He has two grandchildren Devon and Trevor Winters and two great-grandchildren Bradley and Oliver Posey. Gus was a retired pressman from the Journal Star. Upon retiring he and Norma enjoyed traveling in their motor home. Their most enjoyable trips were to Arizona in the winter. Gus was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran stationed at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada in the early 1950's. He was stationed there during the testing of the atomic bomb. Gus was part of the Cursillo community and also was involved in prison ministry. Gus had a quick wit and was a jokester and a storyteller. He enjoyed talking to people and exchanging stories and laughter. He was a hard worker and always had a project going. Gus was willing to lend a helping hand to friends and strangers alike. He will be greatly missed by all. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in rural Metamora with Father Greg Jozefiak officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. Mary of Lourdes Cemetery in rural Metamora. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Gus contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke. Online condolences at www.masonfuneralhomes.com.
