Gloria (McDonald) McNett, a devoted educator, volunteer, and community leader, peacefully passed away on November 8, 2024, just days before her 93rd birthday, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Gloria was born to Earl and Blythe (Boydston) McDonald on November 16, 1931, in Knox County, Illinois. After graduating from Lacon Community High School, Gloria went on to earn her bachelor's in education from Eureka College, followed by a master's in education from Bradley University. In 1951, she married William McNett in the Lacon Methodist Church, embarking on a beautiful relationship that lasted over six decades until his passing in 2014.
Gloria's passion for education was evident in her impressive career. She began teaching at Lincoln Grade School in Washington, Illinois, before transitioning to higher education, where she served on the faculties of both Eureka College and Illinois Central College. Across 45 years of teaching, she inspired countless students and left an indelible mark on our beloved community.
Gloria's commitment to her community extended far beyond the classroom. She was a dedicated member and active leader in numerous organizations, including Delta Zeta Pi Chapter, the Eureka College Alumni Board, the Women's Board, Methodist Medical Center volunteers, and P.E.O. Chapter HG. Gloria's civic engagement also included roles on the boards of 5 Points, the Washington Rotary Club, Washington District 52 School Board, and Washington High School 308 School Board for over 20 years. She also gave her time generously to local elementary schools and was a devoted member of The Bridge United Methodist Church, where she found fellowship and purpose.
Gloria is survived by her daughter, Kelly (Bob) Ziegler, and her son, Dr. Michael (Lois) McNett. Her legacy continues through her granddaughters, Amber O'Malley and Michelle (Chris) Mohnett, her sister Katherine Armbrust, and her three great-grandchildren, Hailey Bolen, Isabella Mohnett, and Jackson Mohnett.
