Geraldine S. Summer

WASHINGTON?Geraldine Smith Summer, passed away peacefully at 100 years of age at 3:19 p.m., Friday, August 8, 2014 at Washington Christian Village. Geraldine was born on April 3, 1914 in Washington to Lee Roy and Josephine (Burkey) Smith. She married Clayton H. Summer in Washington on January 9, 1936. He died on March 14, 1994. Among those surviving are two daughters, Carole (Wayne) Simmons of Milwaukee, WI and Nancy (Dan) Silverthorn of Washington; one son, Leroy (Marie) Summer of Metamora; eight grandchildren, Doug Beebe, Greg Beebe, Chad Farischon, Kara (Farischon) Ahlers, Sara (Summer) Puri, Brad Summer, Matt Simmons and Scott Simmons and 11 great grandchildren. Geraldine was very proud to be a fifth generation of the Smith?s, one of the first Washington familys. As her knowledge of genealogy and history of Washington became well known as a #1 resource, she spent many happy hours helping people trace their ancestors. She was a lifelong active member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church. She was President of the Mission Society and enjoyed the fellowship serving on the District level. Geraldine enjoyed helping out as an accompanist for church functions and even at the age of 95 was playing her beloved hymns at the requests of residents of the nursing home. Geraldine was a member of the Black Partridge Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington Women?s Club, Mennonite Historical Society and the Washington Historical Society. When she was interviewed for the paper, she was asked her philosophy of life, Her answer- "Live a life of faith, love and hope." In her 100 years, she reached her goal. Funeral services for Geraldine will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Evangelical United Methodist Church with Pastor John Hauck and Pastor Bob DeBolt officiating. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery in Washington. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Mason-White Funeral Home is assisting the family in arrangements. Memorials for Geraldine may be made to either Evangelical United Methodist Church or Washington Historical Society.
