Garnet H. Hempen, 93, of Washington, IL, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Hope Creek Rehab & Care Center in East Moline, IL. She was born on September 21, 1931, in Bloomington, IL, the daughter of Clinton and Leota Bell Welch.
Surviving are one son, Louis (Tricia) Hempen, of Washington, and one daughter, Judi (Steve) Gibson, of Hillsdale, IL. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Matthew (Stephanie) Gibson, Megan (Kevin) Frey, Mallory (Ethan Swint) Gibson, Ava Hempen, and Olivia Hempen; three great-grandchildren: Tyson, Emma, and Calvin. Further surviving is one sister, Patsy Dudas of Washington. Her daughter Terree Hempen, and one granddadughter Sarah Gibson preceded her in death.
Garnet's professional life was characterized by her dedication and hard work. She began her career at Sealtest, where she quickly became known for her reliability and friendly demeanor. Her journey continued at Nymans Grocery, where she formed lasting relationships with colleagues and customers. Garnet eventually retired from Ben Schwartz Grocers, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and service.
Beyond her work, Garnet had a zest for life that was contagious. She found joy in the simple things, like playing cards with her sisters, where laughter was a common currency. Her love for Club Lacon in Lacon, IL, and Mona's in Toluca was well-known, as these were places where she could unwind and enjoy the company of friends. Garnet's fondness for chili dogs and ice cream was more than a preference; it reflected her belief that life's most profound pleasures are often the most simple.
Garnet had an eye for beauty and a talent for creating it, which she expressed through her love of decorating. Her home was a warm and welcoming space, filled with the evidence of her creative touch and the presence of her loving spirit. But above all, Garnet's greatest joy was found in the time she spent with her family.
Despite living a very humble life, Garnet's generosity knew no bounds. She was the embodiment of selflessness, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her giving nature was not limited to material things; she gave her time, energy, and love without hesitation or expectation of return.
