Emma Jean Bachman, 91, of Peoria, IL, formerly of Washington, IL, passed away at 6:50 am on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Grandview Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Peoria surrounded by her family.

She was born on July 10, 1932, in Washington. She was the daughter of Roy and Vivian Israel Gocker. She married Verland D. Bachman in Washington on August 18, 1951, and he passed away on May 6, 1995.

Surviving are three children: Stephen (Rebecca Cummings) Bachman of Morton, Cheri (Jerry) Huffman of Peoria and Gary (Kristal) Bachman of Metamora, IL; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Jackie Gocker of Peoria. She was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Gocker.

Em was the proud owner and operator of Em's Beauty Bar, a beloved establishment in Washington that has served countless patrons over the years. Her dedication to her craft and customers earned her the prestigious Washingtonian Award in 1988, a testament to her excellence in service and entrepreneurship. Emma's commitment to her community was further recognized when she was named Honorary Washingtonian of the Year in 1986, reflecting her unwavering spirit of giving and engagement.

A member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Emma's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She served with joy and devotion as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the church council, and on the property committee. Her leadership and passion for her faith community were evident in all she did, touching the lives of many through her service and guidance.

Emma's love for her community extended beyond her church and business walls. As the Good Neighbor Days chairman in 1986, she demonstrated her exceptional ability to bring people together in celebration and fellowship. Her two-decade-long involvement with the Washington Chamber of Commerce showcased her dedication to the economic and social vitality of the city she called home.

Those who knew Em will remember her as loving, funny, and friendly. Her impact on Washington and its residents will be felt for generations. Her laughter may have fallen silent, but the echoes of her vibrant spirit will resonate forever in the community she so adored. Her presence was a gift to all who crossed her path, and her memory will be treasured in the hearts of many.

A funeral service is scheduled at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 11 am on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Visitation will be one hour before her service, also at the church. Burial will follow her service at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to her church or Grandview Alzheimer's Special Care Center.
