Eileen E. Schertz

Eileen E. Schertz, 95, of Lowpoint passed away at 12:50pm Wednesday April 11, 2012 at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Home. She was born on November 30, 1916 in Cazenovia, IL the daughter of John and Mary Bachman Bachman. She married Eldon A. Schertz on June 20, 1943 at the family home in Metamora. He passed away on December 5, 2001. Surviving are their children Edward (Irene) Schertz of Cahokia, IL; Fredde Schertz of Lowpoint, IL; Mary Schertz of Elkhart, IN; Ann Schertz of Cumberland, KY; and Kate (Dave) Kortemeier of Metamora; four grandchildren Roberto Schertz, Carlos (Missy) Schertz, Sarah (Keith Martin) Kortemeier and Paul Kortemeier. Also surviving are three brothers Richard Bachman, John (Betty) Bachman and Paul Bachman as well as one stepbrother Russell Bachman. Further surviving are three step sisters Minerva Reeb; Ruth Gross, and Orpha Schertz. One brother Alan preceded in her in death. Eileen started teaching in a one-room school house in 1940. She later taught second grade and retired from the Washburn School District. She and her husband volunteered their services for 13 winters at Mendenhall Ministries in Mendenhall, MS. as well as volunteering at the International Guest House in Washington, DC. She was a member of Metamora Mennonite Church, and also with her husband, Eileen helped plant the Cazenovia Mennonite Church. Cremation rites have been accorded with a Memorial Service scheduled for 11am Saturday April 14, 2012 at Metamora Mennonite Church with Rev. Mike Danner officiating. Visitation will be one-hour prior to her services. Memorials in her name may be given to Mendenhall Ministries 309 Center St. Mendenhall MS 39114; Mennonite Central Committee 21 S. 12th St. Box 500 Akron PA. 17501-0500 or Roanoke Apostolic Christian home. A private family burial will be in Stewart Harmony Cemetery in rural Metamora.
