Edward Anthony Wernsman

Edward Anthony Wernsman, 93, of Milwaukee, WI, formerly of Germantown, IL passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 3:40 pm. He was born on March 3, 1921 in Germantown, IL to George and Elizabeth (Worth) Wernsman. He married Virginia McLaughlin on November 8, 1941. She died in 1983. Surviving are his son Gregory (Eileen) Wernsman; daughter Connie (Patrick) Sheehan; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by sons Stephen and Randolph Wernsman and grandsons Cary and Gabriel Wernsman. Ed was raised on the Wernsman farm in Germantown as the youngest of eleven children. He graduated from Metamora High School in 1939 where he was captain of the basketball team and met his future wife Virginia. Upon the outbreak of WWII, Ed served in the Army, Navy and Army Air Corps. He served with distinction as a member of the army in the New Guinea campaign, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Following the war, Ed moved his family to Milwaukee in 1951. For the next 35 years, he and his brothers, Ray and Harry, owned and operated Milwaukee Sewing Machine Company. Brother-in-law Andy Smith was also a principal in the firm in the early years. After the death of his wife, Ed retired to pursue his avid interest in golf and spend more time with his family. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Metamora with Father Ron Dodd officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary?s Cemetery, Metamora where military rites will be accorded. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Southeast Wisconsin Alzheimer?s Association or the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. Online condolences at www.masonfuneralservices.com.
