Obituary

After 98 years on this Earth, Dorothy M. Farmer of Tremont, Illinois, was called to begin her new life in her Heavenly home in the early morning hours of June 4, 2026, at the home of her daughter, Dianne, with whom she made her home during her final years.

Born at home Aprl 18, 1928, in San Jose, Illinois, Dorothy was the second of six children born to Omer C. and Mary E. (Keith) Fulk.

She first married Lawrence P. Fuchs, with whom she had six children. Later she married Clarence M. Farmer, who preceded her in death.

Both of her parents preceded her in death as well as one daughter, Mary "Kate" Harvill; two bothers, Virgil and Robert Fulk; two sisters, Juanita Bailey and Marjorie Sullivan; and one step-son, Randy Farmer. Two great-granddaughters also preceded her in death.

She is survived by one sister, Verla Hoffman of Topeka, Kansas as well as five children, Jo (and the late Michael) Branan, Sue (Jim) Mischler, David Fuchs, Dianne (Jim) Harris, and Michael (Wendy) Fuchs, as well as two step-sons, Rick (Shelley) Farmer and Stan Farmer. Dorothy was a proud grandmother to 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Being a high school student as WWII broke out, Dorothy reluctantly made the decision to leave high school in order to join the workforce in order to help supplement the income of her parents, especially after her older brother was called to serve in the Army. It wasn't until the age of 70 years that Dorothy was encouraged and persuaded by her children to "go back to school" and earn her GED, which she did, and was awarded her diploma in 1998. In 7th grade, Dorothy's class was given a memory assignment to recite their ABCs backwards. Dorothy aced the task and could impress people with this life-long talent ... last performing for a grandson on May 16, 2026!

After being trained as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone in Peoria, Dorothy held positions as a switchboard operator at Washington Telephone Company, St. Francis Hospital and Proctor Hospital in Peoria, retiring from Proctor.

Dorothy had a soft spot in her heart for animals, rescuing a dog, "Tippy" found along a country road: she also rescued an injured cat "Orphie" found sheltering near the dumpster of a fast-food restaurant. Both became pets and cared for with love. Two more dogs, "Penny" and "Peaches" were close companions for her during her lifetime.

Dorothy had many interests and hobbies during her lifetime. She took pride and great satisfaction in teaching all four of her daughters to crochet. With the help of her six children, Dorothy kept a large garden and canned the fruits of her labor each year. She was a good cook who could make a delicious and filling meal, even when the cupboards were less than full. As a talented baker, Dorothy made beautiful angel food cakes, delicious cream puffs, and was known for inheriting her mother's pie making talent. Dorothy always made Christmas extra special for her family with decorated sugar cookies, divinity, peanut clusters, fudge, and many other treats. In later years, Dorothy perfected making the best peanut brittle and even supplied family and coworkers with a generous supply during the holidays.

Dorothy's long and productive life will be celebrated at a graveside service held at 11:00 a.m. on June 10, 2026, at Glendale Cemetery in Washington, IL, where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband Clarence. No public visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to TAPS No-Kill Animal Shelter in Pekin, IL.
