Donald R. Hertz, 81, of Washington passed away at 8:30am, Monday, July 18, 2016 at Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Toulon, IL. He was born on April 23, 1935 in Peoria the son of Jacob and Verna Schoonover Hertz. He married Frances Drake in 1957. Surviving are his children Dina (John) Durst of East Peoria, Tasha Hertz of Peoria Cheryl Hertz-Hastings of Washington and Terrell (Karen) Hertz of Roanoke. Also surviving is one-step daughter Mary (Darin) Trainor of Dixon, IL., 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Further surviving are three sisters Valerie Hertz-Kusz of Boca Raton, FL Evelyn Finke of East Peoria and Linda Hertz of Peoria. One son Bret Hertz his parents and three brothers preceded him in death. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from April 22, 1953 until being honorably discharged on February 7, 1956. After his discharge he joined the Army Reserves until April 29, 1961. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a truck driver for Smith Transfer in East Peoria and Peoria Industrial Piping in Peoria before his retirement. He was a member of Teamsters and Chauffeurs Union Local #627 in Peoria. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for their kind and compassionate care. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of his remains will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project.
