David L. Smith, 84, of Brimfield, IL, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born on September 9, 1939, in Peoria, IL, to Charles and Mary (Kleppe) Smith. He married Barbara C. Polonus on September 19, 1959, at St. Marks Catholic Church in Peoria. She preceded him in death on March 27, 2023, after 63 years of marriage.
Surviving are two sons, David "Scott" (Julie) Smith of Glen Carbon, IL, and Dr. Mark (Angie) Smith of Washington, IL; one daughter, Anne (Stuart) Smith-Ingersoll of Elmwood, IL. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild survived him. He is also survived by one brother, Gerald (Lucille) Smith of Middleburg, FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, four brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law.
David attended Manual High School in Peoria. He was drafted into the Army and actively served in Korea as a sharpshooter from 1963 to 1965 during the Korean War. He was then in the Independent Ready Reserve until 1969, when he was honorably discharged. David was a carpenter and millwright for Hiram Walker and Mid-America Systems, retiring in 1999. He was a 66-year member and oldest member in Illinois of the Millwright Local 1693 Union. David was also a lifelong member of the Chillicothe Sportsmen's Club. He was a devout Catholic and a St. Joseph Catholic Church member. He loved his family fiercely and would do anything for them. David spent many hours in his "toy shop" making wood and metal creations. He loved his dogs, reading, and traveling with Barbara in retirement. He had a wonderful, complete life and will be dearly missed by those who loved him.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fr. John Verrier on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brimfield at 11 am, with a luncheon to follow. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will take place at Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria, IL, at a later date.
