WASHINGTON?Betty L. Thomas, 95, of Washington, passed away Wednesday morning, December 3, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. Betty was born on November 20, 1919 in Washington to William and Mabel (Wistehuff) Garber. She married Virgil W. Thomas in Washington on September 23, 1939 at the Garber home place on Eureka Road. Virgil preceded her in death on August 21, 2000 in Eureka. Among those surviving is one daughter, Julie (John) Christian of Washington; one granddaughter, Katherine E. C. (Jason) Smith of Washington and a great grandson, Logan Hunter Smith. Betty was also preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Mae Garber and one brother, William Garber, Jr. She worked for Bergners from 1947 until her retirement in 1976. Betty worked calculating inventory at all the Bergner?s stores. Betty earned a degree from Brown Business College in Peoria after graduation from high school. She was truly a wiz-bang typist. She loved canning and gardening on the farm as well as being a friend to all the cats that would always be near by. She was a lifelong member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Washington, where she had helped with various youth groups of the church, sung in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher and also helped in the kitchen. Betty?s priorities in life were her family and her church, and she loved them both with all her heart. Funeral services for Betty will be on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor John Hauck officiating. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 7 at Mason-White Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Evangelical United Methodist Church.
