Bertil C. Nordhielm, 95, of Washington, IL, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the home of his daughter Pati.
He was born in Chicago on December 22, 1928, the son of Arthur and Vendla Carlson Nordhielm. He married Joyce Sprague on February 11, 1951. She died on October 10, 2008. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Brad and David and one brother Berndt.
Surviving family members include one son, Curt (Linda) Nordhielm of Stevens Point, WI; two daughters, Cindy (Randy) Brassfield of Lincoln, IL, and Pati (Brian) Heller of Washington; and a daughter-in-law, Patty (the late David) Nordhielm of Washington. This loving family is also blessed with ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Bert worked as a metallurgist who dedicated 34 years to Caterpillar Tractor, retiring on December 31, 1984,
His life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to spreading kindness and the Christian message. Along with his beloved wife Joyce, Bert played a pivotal role in establishing new Christian Church congregations in Morton and Highview Estates, leaving a legacy of vibrant communities that continue to thrive and inspire.
For over half a century, Bert dedicated himself to teaching Sunday School, shaping the lives of countless individuals with his wisdom and compassion. His teachings extended beyond local boundaries when he and Joyce spent 16 months in Papua New Guinea, supporting the noble effort of translating the Bible, thereby touching the lives of people across the globe.
His service to his country mirrored Bert's service to others. He proudly wore the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army uniforms, receiving honorable discharges from each branch. His patriotism and sense of duty were hallmarks of his character, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
A Funeral Service is scheduled for 11 am on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Washington Christian Church in Washington. His son Curt will officiate the service. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be given to OSF Hospice.
