Al enlisted and served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge he attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Journalism. After working in sales for Collier encyclopedia he spent many years pursuing various journalist endeavors until settling on the weekly production of Nearby Night Life Magazine. He was proud of his military service and was actively involved with the local Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, where he would search for surviving members and publish their stories.
