Alan Howerter

December 13, 1952 — February 5, 2025

Washington, IL

Alan Howerter, 72, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in Washington, Illinois at his residence. Born on December 13, 1952, in Avon, Illinois, Alan lived a life marked by dedication to family, community, and craftsmanship. He married Susan Elaine Asbury on June 7, 1975, in Washington. This year would have marked 50 years of a wonderful marriage, one his grand-daughter, Grayce, lovingly refers to as "marriage goals".

Alan earned a associate's degree in construction engineering and built a successful career in the field. He worked for two different engineering firms before joining the Greater Peoria Sanitary District, where he served as Chief Construction Engineer for over 25 years until his retirement in 2019. His expertise and leadership left a lasting impact on the projects he oversaw and the colleagues he mentored.

Beyond his professional achievements, Alan was deeply involved in his community. He served as a Washington Alderman for 12 years and was an active member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. His commitment to civic service reflected his passion for improving the lives of those around him.

Alan had a lifelong love for cars and was an integral part of the Rusty Rockers Performance Car Club, holding every position within the organization at some point. His enthusiasm for classic automobiles brought him joy and camaraderie with fellow enthusiasts. Alan's happy place was his "garagemahal" where you could find him working on his 1967 Chevy Chevelle Convertable. Before his death, he purchased an 1932 Essex and was making plans to restore it to its former glory.

A skilled craftsman, Alan enjoyed creating and building furniture for family and friends. Alan had a abundance of patience as he also enjoyed teaching his daughters and grandchildren all he had learned. His talent extended to home improvement projects-he not only loved remodeling but even built his family home. He had an innate ability to fix anything he set his mind to and took great pleasure in teaching others how to do the same. Electrical and plumbing were among his other various talents and joys.

Above all else, Alan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (lovingly referred to as Papa). He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Elaine Howerter; daughters Angela Susanne Magnusson of East Peoria and Ashleigh Grayce Roberts (Evan Owen Roberts) of Yorkville; grandchildren Bryanna Leigh Magnusson, Derrick A. Magnusson, Grayce Mae Roberts, and Pierce Thomas Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lee Howerter and Iona Maxine Bankas Howerter. Also surviving are one brother Paul (Marcia) Howerter of Bushnell, IL.

Alan will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He treated his wife and daughters with the utmost respect and care, embodying the values of love and dedication in every aspect of his life.
